Last year around this time we were on our whirlwind two week trip across France, England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland!
We did France on our own before joining our tour group for England, Scotland, and Ireland on a guided trip with Go Ahead Tours. And on our way to Ireland, we had a stopover in Liverpool.
While we didn’t actually spend an entire day there (I think it ended up being about 5 or 6 hours), it did make for a nice day trip. And it was neat to see!
Now, Rick and I weren’t that into all the activities around The Beatles, which Liverpool is famous for, and while most people on our tour opted to visit The Beatles Museum, we went off and explored Liverpool on our own.
River Mersey cruise
We ended up booking a cruise on the River Mersey while learning about the history of Liverpool. The cruise afforded amazing views of the city, but the voice over was pretty rough and hard to hear.
So, we mostly enjoyed our drinks and the views as we cruised the river for 50 minutes. The river cruise was only £12, so worth it even if we couldn’t hear the commentary.
Wheel of Liverpool
After that we went for a ride on the ferris wheel that also gave us great views over Liverpool and the river we were just on. This too was just £12 per person and while touristy, it did offer pretty cool views.
Royal Albert Dock
After our ride on the Wheel of Liverpool, we crossed the street to Royal Albert Dock to find some food and relax before getting back on our tour bus. The dock dates back to 1846 and houses shops, activities, and restaurants and bars.
To be honest, we were both a bit fish and chipped and beer’d out at that time after traveling around England, Scotland, and Wales for days beforehand. We found this great wine and tapas bar and dug into some of our favorite foods from Spain! We gorged ourselves on sangria, croquetas, sardines, meatballs, and paella at Lunyalita. It was amazing.
We had about five hours total in Liverpool before we had to be back on the bus to head to Chester, where we were spending the night.
Even if you’re not into The Beatles scene, Liverpool was a unique English city to visit and we definitely weren’t bored. I think had we had a full day there we would have checked out some of the other museums or strayed further from Royal Albert Dock to see more of the city instead of its tourist center.
If we find ourselves in Liverpool again, leave any recommendations of what we should check out!
