Things to do

10 travel destinations we plan to revisit

We’ve been fortunate to travel to many iconic cities in the 10 years we’ve been together. From going on multi-country jaunts in Europe on a group tour to getting to these locations by cruise ship, we love checking out new travel destinations.

But, given the nature of some our trips where we pack a lot in, we don’t often get to spend as much time in a city as we would like. There are some cities that I just wanted one more day or at least a few more hours in! But, that’s also the point of traveling the way we do. We visit a lot of places and then decide which ones we need to go back to.

And while there are some cities we’ve seen once and that was enough, the same cannot be said for the destinations in this list.

Here are the top 10 travel destinations we cannot wait to revisit in the future.

10. London, England

We’ve been to London together twice now and we still have so much more to see and do there!

I’ve got a giant running list of fun places for afternoon tea. There are some themed pubs we want to check out. There are still so many museums we need to visit. We did check off a night at the theater on our last trip, but we still have to make it to The Globe! There are other haunted tours of London I want to take.

London is one of those cities that we can go back to time and time again and never do the same thing twice.

Plus, both times Rick and I have gone together the city was under some sort of heat wave and Rick has yet to experience a rainy day in London. So we have to go back just so he can experience the real weather in the city.

9. Rome, Italy

Italy is one of our favorite places we’ve been to together and we keep talking about when we’ll return. We loved our last trip in Venice but kind of like London, there’s so much to see and do in Rome that it could keep us busy for weeks.

We still have a few historical sites to visit in Rome as well as just having more leisure time to stroll through the city with some gelato and experience the majesty of such a historic capital.

We still need to do a food tour of the Trastevere neighborhood, visit some of the museums and galleries, and of course find the best pizza and carbonara in the city.

8. Santorini, Greece

I’ll be honest. I purely want to return to Santorini for two reasons.

One, to experience it without the crowds. Now I can’t complain as we contributed to the craziness by being daytime cruise tourists ourselves, but it was extremely packed. I’d love to see the city when it clears out and feels way more relaxed.

Two, I want to see an iconic sunset over Santorini. The pictures look amazing of a Santorini sunset and I want to see one with my own two eyes.

I also wouldn’t mind returning to Santorini as everything we ate and drank during our few hours there was absolutely incredible and I’d like to continue trying different Greek dishes and wines.

Split, Croatia

7. Split, Croatia

Much like Santorini, we visited Split for the day during our European cruise last summer. It was such a charming city and we only saw a fraction of it. Luckily our time was mostly spent in the historic part and along the Riva, or waterfront, but I know we missed out on a few things to see and do in Split.

Even if we went back on another cruise I’d feel confident we could plan our tour of the city as the ships dock close to the historic center.

6. Dublin, Ireland

Last year we got to visit Dublin on our England, Scotland, and Ireland trip with Go Ahead and we had about two days in the city, which was not enough to experience it fully to our liking.

But, that’s why we do it this way! We now know we want to go back to Dublin and continue checking it out.

We loved our first night in the city when we got to listen to live music and sip on some Guinness in the Temple Bar district, but wanted to do that another night too! We visited St Patrick’s, saw a bit of Trinity College and Phoenix Park, but there are other sightseeing opportunities we missed out on.

5. Athens, Greece

Athens was another stop on our European cruise and we loved visiting the Acropolis and learning about the city’s history, but our time in Athens was very short.

Much like Rome, I know there are so many other historic sites and neighborhoods we need to explore on a return visit. I’ve already got a list of things we need to do next time we’re in Athens, but now we just need to figure out when we can make that happen!

4. Osaka, Japan

We truly only had a few hours in Osaka before it was time for us to head to the airport and head home. And judging from our friends’ texts and photos, we missed out on a really cool city.

I’d love to go back and spend a few nights in Osaka – as well as return to Kyoto and Tokyo again if possible. I think we just scratched the surface on all there is to see and do in those two cities as well. But from what our friends told us, it seems Osaka has some similar vibes to Tokyo but isn’t as big or as populated.

3. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh was another stop on our England, Scotland, and Ireland tour and as soon as we arrived in the city I knew we’d be coming back.

We were able to pack quite a bit in in a short amount of time and got to walk to the top of Calton Hill, visit Edinburgh Castle, walk the Royal Mile, visit Dean Village, and experience the city’s darker side on a ghost tour. But, I know there’s still more we can do, and there are certain things we did on our trip I’d like to do again!

2. Paris, France

I’ve been to Paris three times (once with family, once with friends, and once with Rick) and I still feel like there’s still so much that I haven’t done – especially with Rick in tow!

I’ve been on the stairs in front of Sacre Coeur but never in it. I’ve spent a total of four hours in the Louvre and know I still have hours’ worth of walking through the museum to see it all, and I really want to find some cute bars and cafes in Montmartre to visit.

Paris is a city I will never tire of visiting. It’s so classic and is really just a vibe.

Barcelona, Spain

1. Barcelona, Spain

Last up we have Barcelona, which fortunately for us we will be revisiting real soon!

But between the architecture, the culture, and the food and sangria scene, what’s not to love about Barcelona? When we left Barcelona we both agreed we had to go back again as we’d only seen a fraction of the city. And like other cities on this list, I’m okay repeating some of the activities and sightseeing we’ve already done there. I cannot wait to revisit Sagrada Familia and see how much has changed since we last saw it six years ago.

Traveling somewhere new is always fun, but I also can’t wait for the opportunity to return to some of these incredible travel destinations.
