Romantic phrases in the Romance languages

Vintage couple

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and since love is in the air I thought it’d be fun to explore how we talk about love in the most romantic of the languages, the Romance languages!

The Romance languages all come from Vulgar Latin and split into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian. Rick and I have been studying Italian for about four years now and I took Spanish in high school, him in French, and let me tell you it can get confusing real quick trying to switch between them. More power to anyone who speaks multiple Romance languages!

Right now I’m working on Portuguese for our trip to Lisbon this spring and half the time I find myself trying to answer in Italian. So good news is the Italian is here to stay, bad news is it seems my brain only wants to know one extra Romance language.

Rick and I can attempt to have a full-blown conversation in Italian this Valentine’s Day, but if you’re looking to shake things up and tell your grand amour how much you adore them in an other language, here are some handy phrases for your night of romance!
